Papermaking industry
Used in the papermaking industry: Generally, kaolin is used as a pigment in coating materials for coated paper. Other powders include calcium carbonate, barium sulfate, satin white, titanium dioxide, aluminum hydroxide, talc, zinc chloride, zinc white, barium sulfate, and talc.
Kaolin with a platy structure, when applied to the surface of the base paper and then calendered, arranges itself parallel to the paper surface, resulting in high reflectivity and thus very high smoothness and gloss. Kaolin with a non-platy structure (such as tubular and rhombohedral structures) does not have these advantages. This is a crucial consideration in material selection and production. In China, kaolin from Suzhou, Maoming, and Zhanjiang is of high quality (including high platy structure content), so it is often used as a pigment.
Kaolin is also commonly used as a filler. It can similarly improve the writability and printability of paper, increasing its uniformity, smoothness, and gloss.
Kaolin used as a paper filler is usually dried, pulverized, and then classified and purified by screening. Kaolin used as a pigment often requires water purification to obtain better color and finer particle size.
